Maruwu Seicha in SF Japantown serves up a focused selection of matcha-forward drinks and desserts that appeal to tea lovers and those curious about refined Japanese flavors. This spot is best described as a specialized café centered around matcha and hojicha, with offerings ranging from vibrant lattes topped with cheese foam to delicate matcha cheese tarts and creamy soft serve ice cream. It's a place where locals and festival-goers alike pause to refresh with sweet and earthy treats crafted with care.

The atmosphere inside is casual but bustling, especially during weekends or events like the Cherry Blossom Festival when lines can form steadily. There are two ways to order—either at a counter with staff assistance or via a self-service machine—making the process flexible depending on your comfort level and time constraints. The staff tend to be friendly and helpful, which softens the wait and adds to the experience.

Most visitors seeking Maruwu Seicha are looking for quality matcha preparations—options vary in sweetness levels and temperature, accommodating different tastes. Whether it’s a hot hojicha latte made with naturally sweet Hokkaido milk or a vibrant iced strawberry matcha latte, there’s a focus on balance and depth rather than flashy gimmicks. The matcha ice cream, while popular, seems to be more a complement than the main draw; it’s appreciated for its creamy texture and pairing with other desserts like the matcha cheese tart or hojicha-infused brownies.

Maruwu Seicha works well as a stop during a stroll through Japantown or as a small-group spot to share dessert and drinks. It’s not designed for long lingering stays or extended meetings but rather for a quick, enjoyable pause when you want to savor something thoughtfully crafted. The best times to visit tend to be midweek or weekday afternoons when the crowd is lighter, making it easier to experiment with some of their more unique menu items without the line.

In summary, this café is tailored for those who appreciate Japanese tea culture filtered through a contemporary lens—people who want their matcha intense and authentic, handmade desserts that aren’t overly sweet, and a convenient but personable service experience. Locals who frequent Japantown for its traditional shops will find Maruwu Seicha a comfortable counterpoint to the bustle, offering a refreshing and quietly satisfying taste of modern tea craft.

Another spot we hit up during the Cherry Blossom Festival (4/20/25). I had heard about the matcha and definitely wanted to try it. The line had been long all day but we decided to wait towards the end of the festival. I ordered the Fresh Taro Matcha Latte (no sugar) and the Hojicha Latte (less sweet). Both were tasty and the matcha was very good. There are definitely other items on this menu I want to try. The matcha affogato, all the affogatos actually, the Ube ice cream, and pistachio match latte (which was sold out). Though the line was long they did their best to keep it moving and make it efficient. The order came out quickly and I look forward to trying their matcha's again in the future.

This location in the West Mall and always has a line but its usually worth the queue. I have only had their ice cream but most flavors I’ve tried are delicious. Their ice cream is enough to feed two easily. I usually am able to split it by asking for an extra cup or cone. There are two lines, one to order with an attendant and one to order by machine. From what I have observed, typically the attendant is faster.

Wow, and I mean wow. The matcha green tea was amazing! I had it hot, and it was one of the best I ever had. The ice cream was delightful, and my kids enjoyed it. The cold drinks look really good as well- and I was pleasantly surprised by this shop. It's a reason why it was really popular- the service was nice and fast. The barista was really friendly and helpful. Definitely coming back here if I'm in here. Try the macha, hojicha, ice cream. I want to try the matcha/ube next time. Enjoy!!

Extremely delicious! Apparently they use Hokkaido milk, which is naturally sweet, so I decided to get my drink at 0% sugar. I got a hojicha latte. And it did end up tasting sweet even at 0% sugar. The taste wss very pleasant. They also sell cheese tarts and soft serve. Would return!

This is the best matcha I have ever had!! We got the matcha latte with 25% sweetness and hochia cold foam. It was the perfect order! We also tried the matcha affogato, which was also yummy. The icecream isn’t anything special, the concentrated matcha is the highlight

the matcha latte with snow top was the best matcha i’ve ever had, but i love really sweet things for reference. the cheese tarts were both good, the seasonal when I went was yuzu matcha and it was fine, tasted like key lime pie

As a matcha lover,i think it's good, the only thing is the ube matcha latte was barely any ube in it. It ran out almost immediately, and the rest of the drink just tasted like plain matcha. About the tart, the original cheese tart is recommend. But I do NOT recommend the matcha tart — it was bitter in an unpleasant way. The ube tart was the complete opposite: way too sweet.

Matcha drinks and cheese pastries here! Everything was great. The strawberry matcha latte serving of strawberries is very generous - we’ll be back!
